Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises
Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector has emerged as tremendously dynamic and energetic segment of the Indian economy. It plays a vital role in generating employment and industrialization especially in non-urban areas. MSME consists of 36 million units, providing employment to over 80 million persons, 45% of the manufacturing output and 40% of the exports with 8% contribution to GDP.
The MSME sector has shown persistent annual growth rate of over 10% for the past few years. The significance of MSMEs is attributable to their calibre for employment generation, low capital and technology requirement, promotion of industrial development in rural areas, use of traditional or inherited skill, use of local resources, mobilization of resources and exportability of products.
Timely policy intervention and due support have resulted in rendering the Indian MSMEs globally competitive. However, MSMEs involve a wide range of safety and health hazards including chemical, physical, ergonomic, machine related hazards, fire & explosion, use and storage of hazardous chemicals.
As per ILO, MSMEs are also characterized by higher rate of accidents and ill health effects are 20% more frequent in small enterprises than in enterprises of more than 100 workers, and 40 per cent more frequent than in enterprises employing more than 1,000 worker. Therefore, development of healthy working conditions, proper OSH training and awareness is essentially required for the overall development of the industries.
